Make It Work Michelle!

        Since seeing Sara’s take on the Burda Michelle Skirt I’ve wanted one… in linen.

        Because I have only 30-40cm strips of linen cut grainwise (the same I used for the Linen Knee Pants and the Linen Top) I had to find a solution to the width problem …to “make it work” - as would Tim Gunn say (…my latest entertainment during sewing being watching Project Runway DVDs).

        Another problem I had to face is finding a way to bypass some of the intrinsic characteristics of linen. The linen I use deforms on crossgrain an insane amount and in a skirt with a style not exactly fitted and not exactly loose as this one when you sit it would stretch a lot… I was afraid that when you stand up then would sag creating an unpleasant “baggy wrinkled cloth” effect and I’m into sustainable fashion not homelessness.

        It took some pattern slashing and around 6 meters of bias tape of various sizes to solve both my problems (width and structure).

        The bias tape (cotton … I couldn’t find a finer one so I had to make do) acts very much like boning giving the whole thing some structure and rigidity.

        I love the way it moves! My nephew kept trying to make me twirl.

Make It Work Michelle!

        Da quando ho visto la Gonna Burda Michelle cucita da Sara ne ho voluto una… in lino.

        Dato che ho solo delle strisce da 30-40cm di lino tagliato in altezza (lo stesso lino che ho usato per i Pantaloni e per il Top in Lino) ho dovuto trovare una soluzione …ho dovuto “farla funzionare” . Fallo funzionare! ( in inglese Make it Work )è una delle frasi preferite da Tim Gunn in Project Runway (…ultimamente mi diverto a guardare i DVD di Project Runway mentre sto cucendo).

        Un altro problema che ho dovuto affrontare è stato quello di superare alcune delle caratteristiche intrinseche del tessuto. Il lino che sto usando si deforma tantissimo in larghezza perciò in una gonna come questa, non esattamente aderente e non esattamente ampia sui fianchi, quando siedi perde la sua forma e poi diventa improponibile sopratutto da dietro - a me sta a cuore l’idea della moda sostenibile non di sembrare una senza tetto.

        Ci sono voluti un paio di tagli sul cartamodello e circa 6 metri di nastro sbieco per risolvere entrambi problemi (larghezza e struttura).

        Il nastro sbieco (in cottone … ho cercato uno in un tessuto più fine ma nella mia città è introvabile perciò mi sono dovuta accontentare) si comporta in una maniera molto simile ad una ossatura (penso il termine inglese “boning” si traduca con ossatura … non ho la più pallida idea).

        Mi piace moltissimo come si muove. Mio nipote insisteva nel farmi girare.

The “Gelato” Socks

        Because it’s summer my hiking boots socks got upgraded to the “gelato” socks. I love a little bit of colour with the dull brown of my comfortable, technical yet not exactly stylish boots.

        Pattern: Latvian Socks by Lizbeth Upitis published in Vogue Knitting Ultimate Sock Book
        Yarn: Mafil Daniela 100% preshrunk pure wool
        Colours: 425 Pistachio & 442 Coral (I pretty much kept the colourway in the original pattern)
        The socks are knitted from the cuff down and have a scalloped edge, heel flap and wedge toe.

        I used four bamboo dpns instead of the recommended two circular needles so I had to adapt the pattern. BTW the charts are misnumbered so be sure to check the errata. I didn’t know there was one (did not checked Ravelry) so I had to figure them out; as they just didn’t seem right.

        The photos were taken near the Pradis Green Caves during the “Prehistoric Days”, which are two sundays of workshops (mainly for children) conducted by archeology and palaeontology professors and students. Because me and my sister’s in law husband were the only ones not involved with the workshops I seized the opportunity and asked him to help me with the photos … so … thank you Michele!

        I am not exactly what you would call a girly girl and yet I liked the color scheme and the harts pattern and that is what determined me do knit these socks and call them the “Gelato” socks.

        And because we’re talking summer and gelato I’ve been having a song stuck in my head for the last couple of hours … It’s actually the soundtrack for a well known italian gelato brand:

I Calzini “Gelato”

        Visto che è estate i miei normali calzini da trekking sono stati rimpiazzati dalla versione “Gelato”. Mi piace un po di colore per ravvivare il marrone noioso delle mie comode, tecniche ma per niente “fashion”, scarpe da trekking.

        Modello: Calzini Lettoni di Lizbeth Upitis pubblicati in Vogue Knitting Ultimate Sock Book
        Filato: Mafil Daniela 1100% pura lana irrestringibile
        Colori: 425 Pistacchio e 442 Corallo (lo schema cromatico e molto vicino a quella del modello originale)
        I calzino sono lavorati dal bordo verso la punta (top down) hanno il bordo a smerlo, tallone a tassello e punta a cuneo chiusa con una chiusura tubolare (Kitchener).

        Ho usato un gioco di ferri in bamboo invece dei due ferri circolari consigliati dal modello perciò ho dovuto adattare le istruzioni. A proposito: i schemi sono numerati in modo sbagliato, non sapevo che esistesse un errata (non ho verificato su Ravelry) e ho dovuto fare e disfare perché non tornava.

        Le fotografie sono state scattate nei pressi delle Grotte di Pradis durante “Le Giornate della Preistoria”, che sono due domeniche di laboratori (rivolti principalmente ai bambini) sotto la supervisione di professori e studenti di archeologia e paleontologia. Dato che io ed il marito di mia cognata eravamo li in qualità di “accompagnatori” le nostre metà coinvolte con i laboratori e l’organizzazione, ho approfittato e le ho chiesto di darmi una mano con le foto … perciò … grazie Michele!

        Non sono esattamente una ragazza “rosa” e nonostante ciò mi sono piaciuti i colori ed il modello a cuori ... per questo li ho scelti e li ho chiamati “Gelato”

        Dato che parliamo di estate e gelato c’è una canzone che mi sta girando per la testa da un paio di orette … e sorpresa è proprio quella del gelato:

“Carme Blouse” Muslin

        One step further in my Making the Look project: my first try at the Carme Blouse - a muslin that actually turned out quite wearable… I think :)…

        The Came Blouse by Pauline Alice Patterns has a brilliant design … great construction, a classic casual look and a versatile pattern. While I was making it I thought of at least four variations and I’m really excited about them.

        The fit was spot on ( I cut a size 36)… I only lowered the bust dart (maybe a centimetre too much) and I should have lengthened the sleeves a bit … when I first cut it I thought about having to do it but than I sort of forgot … lucky I can roll them.

        I like the overall fell of it. The only thing that I perceive as awkward is the collar. Maybe it’s to large for my scrawny neck.

        The making was straight forward … the instructions are easy to follow and the sew-along Pauline put together is great. I did however sew the the sleeves inside out and hat to take them apart but that was just me being me and trying to watch a movie while sewing.

        For the “Look” I’ve already picked up my fabric - a white cotton batiste. For the occasion the Carme it’s going to loose the mandarin collar and get a flat neckband - I’m going for the “underwear” sort of look. The vent and gathering of the sleeves are going to be replaced with a placket closure and I’ll lengthen the whole blouse by a couple of centimetres.

        BTW this is my sewing six months “anniversary” - that’s right I started learning sewing six months ago :))) … and because my brain is too full with all I’m doing and learning I felt the need of some sort of “external memory” and got myself an instagram account. It’s nothing glamorous - just the usual mobile pics documenting what I’m doing when I’m doing it - mistakes included.

Tela di prova “Blusa Carme”

        Un altro passo nel mio Progetto Look Steven Alan: il mio primo tentativo di realizzare una Blusa Carme - una tela di prova che alla fine risulta piuttosto indossabile… credo :)…

La Blusa Carme della Pauline Alice Patterns ha un design brillante … buona costruzione, un look casuale classico e un cartamodello versatile. Mentre stavo cucendo ho pensato ad almeno quattro variazioni che mi piacerebbe fare.

        Le misure sono perfette ( ho tagliato una taglia 36)… Ho solo dovuto abbassare le riprese sul busto e forse l’ho fatto un centimetro di troppo. Avrei dovuto allungare un po le maniche; quando tagliavo il cartamodello ho pensato di farlo ma poi non so come mi sono totalmente scordata … per fortuna le posso girare ;)

        Mi piace molto come la sento addosso. L’unica cosa che mi infastidisce è il colletto alla coreana, e un po troppo largo per il mio collo sottile e la prossima volta lo dovrò modificare.

        La realizzazione è stata, non dico semplice, ma diretta, senza intoppi. E vero che ho montato le maniche con l’interno fuori … ma non per colpa delle istruzioni … l’ho fatto mentre guardavo un film perciò ho dovuto scucirle e montarle di nuovo. I cartamodello e disponibile con le istruzioni in tre lingue: inglese, francese e spagnolo. Nelle stesse lingue, se non sbaglio (io ho guardato quello in inglese) è disponibile un sew-along - una serie di video che spiegano la realizzazione passo per passo.

        Per il “Look” ho già scelto il tessuto - una batista di cottone bianco. Per l’occasione modificherò la Carme e rimpiazzerò il colletto alla coreana con un collo rotondo - sto provando a darli un look che ricordi certi indumenti intimi. La chiusura delle maniche con spacco e arricciatura lascerà il posto a una classica abbottonatura da camicia e dovrò allungare l’intera blusa di un paio di centimetri.

        A proposito questo e il mio anniversario di sei mesi da quando ho cominciato a imparare a cucire ;))) e mi sono resa conto che avendo il cervello già pieno di troppe cose, ho bisogno di documentare quello che sto facendo in caso volessi rifarlo … perciò ho aperto un account instagram Niente di che - le fotografie sono fatte con il cellulare ma documentano quello che sto facendo quando lo sto facendo - errori compresi.
