Bruyère

        I’m wearing a top hat to distract you from the badly matching lines and the moiré!

        This is the Deer&Doe Bruyère Shirt in a mishmash of sizes and bearing so many alterations that the original pattern got buried so deep it would take a shovel to dig it out. Why? Because the way my body is built is soooooo far away from the Deer&Doe “standard”. This pattern is not a generic one and when I say generic I mean based on some generic block like the ones straight out of the pattern cutting books. This pattern has been fitted to a specific body type and I think this proves its “originality” - and lately has been some talk about the originality of independent patterns.

        Still… I love the design of the Bruyère so much that I went ahead and ploughed my way through a bust adjustment from the original D cup to my almost B cup (through both bust darts). I lengthened a lot the bodice - when Eléonore, the designer, says 168cm height it IS 168cm height. As a base size I cut the a 36. Although I cut the neckline at a 34 I had to reduce it further by 1cm - and it’s still not enough. I like to be able to close my shirts to the last button if I feel like.

        I added ca. 1cm to the shoulder length also and about 1.5 cm to the sleeve cap. Because I have no intention of wearing this shirt to do manual labour or run track I reduced the ease at the back a lot and I mean a lot. The same with the bicep girth and I also raised the armhole. Yeah I know I had to do quite a bit but this is how much I love the design.

        The fabric is a small houndstooth in a slightly stretchy wool blend. Not much but enough to complicate things especially when time came to assemble the belt and the button placket.
        The first placket I made I did not pay very much attention to the fabric pattern and I ended up with two adjacent black lines - very disturbing visually and some vertical shifting. I knew then I had to do it by hand. So I got comfortable turned the tv on, took a deep breath and started doing one of the things I like less: hand sewing. The second placket was alright but I did not like the buttons. Decided that I wanted a less intrusive closure - if possible invisible. For the third I used sew on snaps. It resulted too bulky with the thickness of the snaps and there was also some gapping. It just wouldn’t lie flat! For the final one I crossed my fingers and used sew in snaps.         I am pleased with the result although as you can see the back is still to long.
        I’m sorry we had really bad weather lately and I couldn't photograph it outside and the inside pictures are not at all good - they don’t do it justice.
        btw I am wearing my latest (i. e. second ;) pair of Ginger Jeans!

        And because here in Italy American Horror Story: Freak Show is about to premiere I leave you with my creepiest grin ad also with the proof the neckline opening is still too big.

Bruyère

        Sto indossando un cilindro nel vano tentativo di distogliere la vostra attenzione dalle linee che combaciano male e dalla moiré nelle foto!

        Questa è la Camicia Bruyère di Deer&Doe in un mix di taglie e con sopra talmente tante alterazioni che per scovare il cartamodello originale servirebbe una pala. Perché? Perché la mia corporatura è moooolto diversa dallo "standard" Deer&Doe. Questo cartamodello non è uno generico e quando dico generico intendo basato su qualche blocco base generico come quelli nei libri di modellistica. Questo cartamodello è stato adattato per una corporatura ben precisa e penso questo ne provi la "originalità" - ultimamente ci sono state un po' di discussioni sull'originalità dei cartamodelli indipendenti.

        Nonostante le differenze in conformazione tra me è la modella di Deer&Doe il design di questo cartamodello mi piaceva (e mi piace) così tanto che ho deciso di affrontare tutte le modifiche da fare. Anzitutto ridurre il busto da una coppa D a una quasi B. Ho dovuto inoltre allungare di parecchio il corpetto - quando Eléonore, la designer, dice 168cm di altezza, sono 168 cm di altezza. Come misura base ho tagliato una 36. Anche se lo scollo l'ho tagliato in misura 34 l'ho comunque dovuto ridurre ancora di c. 1cm ed ancora non basta. Mi piace poter indossare le mie camicie abbottonate fino all'ultimo bottone se mi va.

        Ho aggiunto 1cm alla lunghezza spalla e 1,5cm al colmo manica. Perché non ho alcuna intenzione di indossare questa camicia per fare lavori di manovalanza o per andare a correre ho ridotto la vestibilità nella schiena di c. 3cm. Lo stesso per la manica all'altezza bicipite. Ho anche alzato l'incavo. Si lo so ho dovuto fare parecchie modifiche - così tanto mi piace questo design.

        Il tessuto è un pied-de-poule piccolo in un misto lana un po' elasticizzato. Non molto, quanto basta per complicare le cose quando si è trattato di confezionare la cintura ed il cannoncino.
        Quando ho cucito il primo cannoncino non sono stata particolarmente attenta alla distribuzione delle linee perciò sono finita con due linee nere adiacenti - visivamente molto fastidioso, e qualche slittamento verticale del pattern. Ho capito che lo dovevo farlo a mano. Mi sono mesa comoda, ho acceso la Tv, fatto un bel respiro ed iniziato con la cosa che meno mi piace in assoluto: cucire a mano. Il secondo cannoncino e venuto ok ma non mi piacevano i bottoni. Ho deciso che preferivo una chiusura con un minore impatto, possibilmente invisibile. Per il terzo perciò ho usato dei bottoni a pressione del tipo "sew on" che però creavano troppo spessore. Dunque arriviamo al quarto cannoncino per il quale ho utilizzato sempre dei bottoni a pressione sta volta del tipo "sew in" . Questa immagine instagram ne dimostra la costruzione. Se avete delle altre domande chiedete :) !

        Sono contenta del risultato anche se come si puo vedere la schiena e ancora troppo lunga.
        Mi dispiace se a causa del maltempo, che i giorni passati si è abbattuto sulla mia zona, non sono riuscita a fotografarla fuori è le immagini in interno non sono chissà che.

        Visto che in Italia American Horror Story: Freak Show andrà in prima questi giorni, vi lascio con il mio più raccapricciante sogghigno e la prova che lo scollo è ancora troppo grande.

A Bottom-up(ish) Pair of Gingers

        I've made jeans! I've made jeans! I've made jeans!

        Fabric:
        The awful denim I've made these in is one of the fabrics part of my #badfabricspledge. Before washing, was thin and quite stiff, without an apparent texture (looked waxed somehow) and dark grey blue in color. Then I washed it. Terrible. Lost all body, sheen and discoloured in long streaks. I had to dye it twice to get an uniform coloration - environmental impact: 1000!

        Pattern&Fitting:
        The pattern is the Ginger Jeans pattern by Closet Case Files. It includes two versions a low waist stovepipe leg and a high waist skinny leg. I cut this last one in a size 10. It's the size that gives the finished garment measurements around the same size as my actual hips and not knowing how stretch my denim really was I wanted to have enough fabric to be able to fit them without unnecessary headaches. I also added 2 cm to the crotch seam allowance. I basted them, put them on, pinned the excess fabric at crotch, inseam and at the sides, then modified the pattern and trimmed away the excess fabric at the edges. Overall I think I downgraded to about a size 4 but I left the lower leg a size 10.

        Mods:
        What's up with the yoke?
        Here comes the bottom-up part.
        Bottom-up is a line developed by Liu Jo. It's a "process" consisting in the use of an inverted yoke and a hip dart and it's supposed to give “better” fit and shaping (especially to those of us not sporting much booty). I do not own a pair of their jeans but the construction scheme is common knowledge so I figured I should try it. My results are not perfect and I need to refine the whole thing - for instance I think I'll have to raise the center back some more; only did it for 1 cm and it’s not enough. I want the yoke line to be more curve. I Intend to publish sooner rather than later more on the yoke whys and hows but the highlights are: invert the yoke piece left to right, create a hip dart to compensate for the extra side length, fix/redraw/true the waistline whatever works for you. In theory the whole thing is a bit more complex but this is the quick and dirty hack version.
        I also lowered the total rise resulting in a mid-rise version.

        Side-by-side comparison with a very popular, average priced RTW brand I will not name pair of jeans. I chose the pair with the most similar fit and feel.

        The Good:
        “Me: What do you think?
        Him: I think you should keep it…
        Me: What?!
        Him: The ass… “
        I guess the above dialog sums it all up pretty well.

        The Bad:
        Where do I start?!
        The fabric, besides not being a very nice fabric has no stretch recovery that you can speak of. You get out in the morning wearing a pair of skinny jeans and get back in the evening wearing classic jodhpurs. I think this lack of stretch recovery is also the main reason behind the drag lines around the knee and at the back of the leg - will see with the next pair.
        The stitching quite frankly sucks. I had the bad idea to use a triple stitch to do the topstitching (although my sewing machine works with common jeans thread just fine) and had to use the walking foot to avoid stretching and shifting. BTW the Bernina walking foot is huge. If you think sewing curved lines with this settings might be at least annoying try to imagine sewing parallel curved lines. With all of my 5 minutes long sewing experience. Yep. Tough. Never again….
        The back pockets - waaay too low!
        The front closure needs improving. Looks just like the RTW but I am not making RTW. RTW I can buy!!!

I like her construction order and other little things like adding the back pockets after having topstitched the back seam to be able to place them at the same distance from the topstitching line.

        UPDATE/DISCALIMER
        The Buttom-up thing (watch the Liu Jo promo here) does not a bigger derrière make. It redistributes volumes: from a pear (flatter) tush towards an apple shaped one. The fact that it seems to appear bigger in some pictures is due mainly to my fiancee (straight male) being forced behind the camera. He kept zooming on the thing - let’s call it a psycho-optical-illusion ;) .

Ginger (quasi) Bottom-up Jeans

        Ho cucito jeans! Ho cucito jeans! Ho cucito jeans!

        Tessuto:
        Il denim terribile che ho utilizzato faceva parte del mio impegno #badfabricspledge. Perché dico terribile?! Prima di lavarlo era sottile, abbastanza rigido, di un colore blu grigio scuro e senza una texture apparente - sembrava quasi cerato. Dopo il lavaggio ha perso tutto il corpo, la lucentezza ed è stinto a lunghe righe (nervature). Ho dovuto tingerlo due volte per rendere il colore uniforme. La Coloreria:1 - Ambiente:-1000!

        Cartamodello e Adattamento:
        Il C.M. è il Ginger Jeans di Closet Case Files (in inglese). Include due versioni: una a vita bassa e gamba dritta e una skinny a vita alta. Ho tagliato la taglia 10 di quest’ultima. E’ la taglia che da una circonferenza fianchi del capo finito quasi pari alla misura reale dei miei fianchi. Come sapevo di doverlo adattare e non sapevo quanto elastico fosse il mio denim ho pensato tagliarlo più grande una buona idea. Meglio tenersi larghi! Inoltre ho anche aggiunto 2 cm in più ai margini di cucitura già inclusi nella zona cavallo. Li ho imbastiti, indossati e impuntato l’eccesso di tessuto nella zona cavallo, interno gamba e ai lati. Ho modificato il C.M. e rifilato i bordi dei miei pezzi. In tutto penso di essere scesa fino alla taglia 4 circa ma ho lasciato la gamba (dal ginocchio in giù) misura 10.

        Modifiche:
        Cosa succede con la baschina dietro?
        Questa è la parte che riguarda il Bottom-up.
        Il Bottom-up e un linea sviluppata dalla Liu Jo. E’ un “processo” che consiste nel impiego di una baschina invertita e di una ripresa sul fianco e vuole dare “migliore” vestibilità e forma. Non possiedo un paio dei loro jeans ma lo schema costruttivo è semplice perciò ho pensato: perché non provare! Il risultato non è perfetto e devo lavorarci ancora - per esempio dovrei penso allungare ancora la linea del centro dietro, l’ho allungata solo di 1cm e non basta. Vorrei dare più curvatura alla linea della baschina. Scriverò più in la un’articolo più dettagliato sul perché e come ma per il momento posso dirvi che in sostanza ho invertito la baschina destra-sinistra, ho formato una ripresa sul fianco per compensare la lunghezza laterale e ho sistemato/ridisegnato la linea vita. In teoria il tutto è più complesso ma questo è un “hack” veloce.
        Ho anche abbassato un po' la vita.

        Comparazione fianco a fianco con un paio di jeans RTW di una nota marca che non nominerò. Ho scelto il paio che meglio si assomigliava dal punto di vista della vestibilità e del aspetto.

        Mi piace:
        “Me: Cosa ne pensi?
        Lui: Penso dovresti tenerlo …
        Me: Cosa?!
        Lui: Il culo…”
        Penso questo piccolo dialogo riassume abbastanza bene la cosa.

        Non mi piace:
        Da dove comincio?!
        Il tessuto, oltre a essere non molto bello, non ha una buona ripresa elastica, anzi. Esci la mattina indossando un paio di jeans skinny e torni la sera in un paio di pantaloni classici da cavallerizza. Credo che questa mancanza di ripresa elastica sia anche il motivo dietro tutte quelle pieghe attorno al ginocchio e dietro gamba - vedremmo il prossimo paio.
        Le cuciture non sono affatto belle. Ho avuto la pessima idea di utilizzare un punto triplo per fare le impunture (anche se la mia macchina non ha nessun problema a cucire con il filo per jeans) e un piedino a doppio trasporto per evitare deformazioni. A proposito: il piedino doppio trasporto della Bernina è enorme. Se pensate che con queste impostazioni cucire linee curve sia fastidioso immaginatevi cucire linee curve parallele! Con i miei 5 minuti di esperienza nel cucito. Dura. Mai più …
        Le tasche dietro sono troooopo in basso!
        La chiusura davanti ha bisogno di essere sistemata meglio. Lo so che sembra uguale a quella del RTW ma io non sto producendo RTW. L’RTW lo posso comprare!

Mi piace la sua sequenza di costruzione ed altre piccole cose come cucire le tasche dietro dopo aver impuntato la linea centrale dietro, per poterle piazzare a distanza uguale dall’impuntura.

        Ps. Attraverso tecniche complesse sono riuscita a registrare i pensieri di Eli (il labrador):

The Intended New Year’s Eve Dress

        Why intended? Because I never wore it :(. I was running a fever and went with a flannel shirt, sweater and jeans. Yay!

        The story of this dress starts with me wanting to buy a piece of this 3D flowers print silk crêpe from Supercut, getting there too late and having to settle for just one meter.
        What to do with one meter of silk crêpe?
        I looked for patterns to use and when I couldn’t find one that I liked and was suitable for my piece of fabric (something to not require cutting or shaping it too much - I felt it would destroy the print) I decided to design it myself. Inspired by the obvious psychotic episode the designer of the fabric had (hey… 3D flowers!!! ) I went with the flow and imagined a sort of a long sleeved smock “peaking” from under a bodice that combines elements of a straightjacket (psychosis theme) and of the regency tailcoat (especially the sleeves). In short a structured and constrictive looking bodice (fitted, narrow shoulders, high sleeve cap … etc) over a free, flowy skirt.

        The asymmetrical cut of the bodice at the hem I intended to serve as transition between the two.

        The bad:
        Not interfacing the wool crêpe I used for the bodice was clearly a mistake. With wear losses the structure and gets a cloth like appearance that I am not mad about. I think I should have interfaced it pretty much in it’s entirety with a light stretch fusible interface.
        I need to refine the sleeves - too fiddly to set in. If you get the look I was going for I am open for suggestions.

        Practice more sewing with wool crêpe; I somehow managed to sew without problems the silk (everything is french seamed) but on the wool crêpe - hello seam puckering! Arrrrgh!
        Other stuff that I am sure you will see and readily point it to me….

        The good:
        I think the design is ok. I mean… I like it - it is what I wanted. I was not aiming to emphasise any particular part of my body. I just wanted a dress that would “walk” well and it does. You can see me trying to be all catwalk like on Instagram - with a 3°C wind hitting me in the face - I have actual tears in my eyes!!! I love garments that move well. I personally think femininity can be expressed through movement also and not only through sexiness, hourglassiness and so forth.
        I am proud of the way I handled the silk with it being my first time and all.
        Other stuff that I am sure you will see and readily point it to me….

        For purely scientific reasons and/or because you’re such a curios kitten, you can download the pattern I made for myself. Be advised it is MTM (made to measure) … me. It will be available until my next post.

        I am not a writer - I am not even an organised thinker so things might slip my mind - if you have any questions, perplexities … just ask! I actually prefer answering questions than blabbering all by myself.

Il Quasi Vestito per Capodanno

        Perché quasi? Perché non l’ho indossato a Capodanno :(. Avevo un po di febbre dunque ho festeggiato in camicia di flanella, maglione e jeans!

        La storia di questo vestito comincia con me provando ad acquistare un pezzo di crêpe di seta con stampa fiori 3D da Supercut, arrivandoci un pelino troppo tardi e dovendomi perciò accontentare con l’ultimo metro.
        Cosa ci puoi fare con un metro di crêpe di seta?
        Ho cercato un cartamodello ma quando non sono riuscita a trovare uno adatto (volevo qualcosa che non richiedesse troppi tagli - ho pensato potessero rovinare l’effetto del motivo stampato) ho deciso di disegnarlo da sola. Trovando ispirazione nel ovvio episodio psicotico all’origine del design del tessuto (stiamo parlando dopotutto di fiori 3D!!!) ho pensato ad una sorta di sottoveste a maniche lunghe (come quelle del 800 per intenderci) che “spunta” da sotto un corpetto che combina elementi della camicia di forza (seguendo il tema psicosi) e della marsina stile Reggenza (mi riferisco sopratutto alle maniche). In breve un corpetto strutturato ed in apparenza costrittivo sopra una gonna libera e fluida.

        Ho visto il taglio asimmetrico della parte inferiore del corpetto come un punto di transizione tra le due “zone” principali: corpetto e gonna.

        Non mi piace:
        Non stabilizzare il crepe di lana che ho usato per il corpetto è stato chiaramente un errore. Indossandolo dopo un po perde la struttura e comincia ad assumere un aspetto straccioso che non mi fa per niente impazzire. Avrei dovuto (penso) usare una fliselina termoadesiva in maglina leggera su quasi tutta la superficie.
        Devo lavorarci ancora un po sulle maniche - è troppo laborioso inserirle. Se avete capito quale è il look che stavo cercando è avete qualche idea - sono aperta a suggerimenti!

        Devo esercitami di più con il crêpe di lana; In qualche maniera sono riuscita a cucire senza problemi la seta usando dappertutto cuciture inglesi…. con il crêpe di lana : increspature a gogo! Ufffa!!!!
        Atre cose che sono sicura voi noterete e prontamente mi indicherete…

        Il design. Penso sia ok - è quello che volevo. Non stavo cercando di enfatizzare nessuna parte del corpo in particolare. Volevo soltanto un vestito che “camminasse” bene e questo lo fa. Potete vedere su Instagram la sottoscritta scimmiottando una passerella con il vento a 3°C che la colpisce in faccia - avevo lacrime vere agli occhi!!!! Adoro gli abiti che si muovono bene, il che non necessariamente significa che si muovono tanto - quello che basta per renderli femminili.
        Ne vado fiera del modo in quale sono riuscita fare le cuciture (inglesi) sulla seta nonostante fosse la mia prima volta.
        Atre cose che sono sicura voi noterete e prontamente mi indicherete…

        Per ragioni puramente scientifiche e/o perché siete dei gattini curiosi, potete scaricare il cartamodello che ho disegnato per me stessa - parola chiave: me stessa… usando le mie misure!
