Adventures in Dartless (1) - Strawberries

Adventures in Dartless (1) - Strawberries

Heya! Got myself (from eBay) a new pattern drafting book. It’s called Il Modellismo Sartoriale, it is published by Istituto Burgo a fashion school in Milan and is bilingual (italian - english).
They use the proportional drafting method, which requires less measurements than the direct method - a few basic measurements, the rest being added through proportional calculations.

The first block they explore is the simple bodice which is dartless and can be used for a wide array of styles.

Dartless Bodice Styles

Although it is relatively simple to draft is less simple to fit (at least for a novice like yours truly). Nevertheless I had to give it a try and made a toile. Some time ago my fiancee’s mother gave me a basket full of pieces of fabric, small pieces, mostly leftovers from her sewing projects and I decided to use one them to make my toile.
      Spring! Strawberries!

Dartless Top

It is a style that works best when there is a small bust difference (which is calculated in the book as half of the difference between the chest and bust circumferences). Diversely from the fitted bodice the fullness at the bust is achieved “in length" therefore it could result in a gaping armhole, especially visible if sleeveless. To correct it I think I overfitted, so it’s a bit snug over the bust.

I used facings around the neck and armholes; so between the medium weight cotton fabric and the facings the whole thing is a bit rigid.

Sleeveless Top

This is the first flowery, fruity thing I ever wore so I feel a bit silly.

It is not perfect, it requires some more work but hey, this is just the first draft.

If you want to try and play with it you can download the pattern I made for myself; it will be available till my next post.

Thank you for visiting. I would love to hear your opinion.

Avventure Senza Riprese (1) - Fragole

Stili a base corpetto lento

  1. It is indeed very cute. I really understand what you mean silly. same here, I've never had any flowery fruity thing. Even if I make one, I think I'd never wear it except for the first picture taking because I feel silly.. which shape is this , is it the H ? I love it, actually I want to find some flowery fabric right at this moment and try to make one just like yours in the pictures. you have a perfect body, the ideal model, plus your excellent photographic skills...so pleasing to the eye!

    1. Thank You Ada! So many compliments - I'm blushing!!!
It was based on an I shape (even at the hem - no rounding except for smoothing out the corners during hemming) but because I'm pushing its limits trying to super fit the armhole it kinda became a trapezoid.

  2. You look lovely in fruits and flowers, not silly at all! The top is a nice shape, and the drafting technique sounds interesting. I downloaded your pattern to take a look. Did your book tell you how to draft the armholes and neckline? I think you're right that a dartless style should probably be more loose fitting, though it looks fine on you, but only you can tell if it's comfortable. The Scout tee is dartless and seems to work out fine for those who've made it in a woven, but the armscyes are less fitted than in your top..

    1. Thank You Sara! The book is quite technical and explains how to draft the basic dartless bodice block which should be looser around the body because it is used for looser styles and also for jackets and coats... but and I quote "The dartless bodice causes the front of the armhole to gape..."
What I did was try to fit it as best as I could in order to eliminate this problem without introducing a dart (even thou an armhole dart would have solved it instantly)--- and I kinda overdid it! I designed the style, the neckline and shaped the armholes myself. I do not have the Scout tee ... it can be considered a "true" dartless pattern if there is a difference in length between the front and the back but is even at the hem, otherwise it is based on the simple knit bodice which has no darts because it is derived from mens sportswear, I think, and for a woman and especially if made in a woven results shorter at the front hem because of the bust difference.
