Norah Gaughan Cabled Vest

Norah Gaughan Cabled Vest

Norah Gaughan Cabled Vest

        It’s cold … I’m knitting …
… besides, I’m swamped with work and if it’s ok to knit for half an hour - it’s pretty frustrating to sew (arrrgh).

Very warm, this vest designed by Norah Gaughan and published in Vogue Knitting Fall 2010, features exploded asymmetrical heart cables travelling up the front panels past the shoulders and around the neck.
It has an hourglass shape emphasised by the back-waist ribbing and an I-cord belt.

The pattern has a generous ease amount because it’s meant as outerwear so I cast-on a size S (btw Vogue offers finished measurements). It has a difficulty rating of 3 (intermediate) but it’s pretty quick to knit with the super bulky yarn and all, and I did not find the cables very difficult. Maybe the most challenging part about this pattern is closing the shawl collar at the back neck.

The recommended yarn is Berocco Peruvia Quick difficult to find in Italy so I substituted with Rowan Big Wool which made the whole thing a bit more heavy but also more warm.

I’m very pleased with it especially because I can wear it paired with one of my felt fedoras (I must confess I’m a compulsive hat buyer) and I think it’s a look that works. Do you agree?

I’m curious to know what do you choose to do when you have very little time for crafting: sew, knit, bake …? How do you organise your time?

Thank you for visiting. I would love to hear your opinion.

Gilè a trecce Norah Gaughan

Knitted Cabled Vest

  4. What a gorgeous piece, and so beautifully done! And yes, two thumbs up for the pairing with the fedora :) I love Norah Gaughan's designs; they're so stylish and really timeless. As for me, when time is limited, knitting is my go-to craft - I love that it's portable, can be taken up even just for a few minutes at a time, and can be done in company without being anti-social :)

    1. Thank you Danielle :) Norah is an amazing designer next of her on my list is the Capecho shrug/bolero/cape ;) ! Yessss I love that knitting is portable - I actually (re)started knitting when I had to deal with really long commutes (I find it hard to focus on reading when people around me are yapping on their phones) unfortunately I never got to explore the social aspects of knitting ...

  5. Oh you cheeky thing! So you can knit beautiful amazing things too! It's gorgeous and I particularly like a piece of knitting that has 'exploding hearts' in the description! Looks great with the hat and I'm with Danielle - knitting is great when times limited and is so portable. I've been very lucky to have this entire week off and home alone I've been sewing up a frenzy! So no time limits for me this week. Your hounds are very cute too!

  6. Adoro!! Bravissima! Hai un sacco di risorse! :) Mi piacerebbe imparare a "knittare", da piccola sapevo farlo, ma poi ho dimenticato tutto! :( dovrei chiedere a mia mamma di rinsegnarmi...

  7. It looks so nice and cozy! I wish I could still knit. I used to, but it hurt my wrist so I gave it up. I can only purchase RTW sweaters now, and that's not half as nice as wearing beautiful home made knits such as yours. I love your hat too!

  9. This is beautiful! I laid my eye on Rowan Big Wool a looong time ago but could not find a perfect project for it. Still can't. It looks like it was the opposite for you: you came up with a pattern first :)

  11. This is so beautiful! I've never really been attracted to vests but this is such a great look and you've styled it perfectly! I knit, too, but just a bit here and there. I tend to knit if I'm too tired to sew. :)

    1. Me neither in fact this is my only vest ... but I loved the front panels so much! Since I started sewing I've really been neglecting my knitting! Now that I have very little time and I'm stressed and tired I find knitting to be my go to craft.

  12. This is fabulous and you look amazingly chic in your ensemble. Love the hat too! I really would like to learn how to knit cables. I find I need my knitting to be at least a little complicated to keep me interested. Which is why my stockinette stitch blanket cardigan is currently hibernating. Boring! I have enrolled in an online cable knitting course, just got to carve out some time. When I have very little time for crafting I read. I love to read and I just can't do everything all the time. It's nice to take a complete step back every now and then.

    1. Thank you Jillian! You are so right you can't do everything all the time! For me too reading is one biological need but I do need peace and quiet to enjoy it ;) and yes stockinette is boring that it's why I do stockinette + something else (taking the train to school, watching tv ...)
