Giant Toddler or Cool?

Giant Toddler or Cool?

Yep, this is my second version of the Turia Dungarees pattern by Pauline Alice (still love it btw) - a short dressier version.

Turia Short Dungarees Pauline Alice

I cut these during the Abilmente fair (mid October!!!). During the fair I had no way of fitting a fresh version so instead of copying the pattern from the original I used my previously modified and fitted version. It was a skinny one so I added as much ease around the legs as I could. I wish I could add more but because of the Abilmente fabric debacle I had to use for these a piece of fabric from my stash that fortunately I brought with me as backup. It was a small piece (140x80 cm) of black Chanel-like fabric (wool+cotton+synthetics - I did not write down the composition) and it took some inventive fabric cutting to make it work.
As I said I wish there was more ease (3-4 cm more) around the legs - the way they are right now they might remind of the german lederhosen (hopefully not that other Sacha’s famous version).

I installed an invisible zipper at the center back. I used a short one (to lazy to go to the store to get a longer one) and I do have to wiggle a bit to get into and out of them… note to self: take it easy with the panettone these holidays!
All the raw edges are serged (the fabric frays like crazy). All the open edges are stabilised with nylon tape. The entire thing is lined. Because the lining was an afterthought I had to attach it by hand using a fell stitch. I officially hate hand sewing.

Side leg slits = extra comfort.

I chose these gilded metal and crystal buttons because I think they are a perfect match with the fabric and the feel of these short overalls. I had four - two I placed on the side mock belt thingys I added. The other two I used to inadvertently give myself golden nipples. I have yet to decide if it’s cheeky or plainly unfortunate.

So… what’s the verdict: giant toddler or cool?

Thank you for visiting. I would love to hear your opinion.

Bambino Gigantesco o Cool?

Salopette Turia Salopette Turia

Your work is just fantastic! I love every single detail of it : all your ideas are absolutely brilliant ! And your fabric....your fabric....well, even in french, I will not find the correct words to qualify it!

    1. Merci Annie! Ça vaut beaucoup pour moi! Funny thing the most likely point of origin of the fabric is one of those shops in Montmartre.. changed several hands - got smaller and smaller and then it found its way into my stash :))

  5. Very, very cool! The fabric and buttons give it such a unique twist. You've taken typical bourgeois elements and turned them on their head. You look amazing!

  6. Really cool!!!

;o) Secondo me devi lanciare Sasha Haute Couture!

    1. haha ...

:D Molto, molto bello comunque!

  12. As always beautifully made, amazing fabric..... You look amazing, I'd say more kawai cute (not sure if that's the right spelling) than toddler! Would look gorgeous styled for summer too.

    1. I know next to nothing about Japanese culture (you are definitely more close to it than I am) so i had to look kawaii up and I must admit I would have never thought about kawaii - this is what I love about this whole thing: confronting myself with new and different points of view!!!

    2. Oh I wondered if I'd spelt it wrong - clearly yes!

  14. I'd agree with cool, but not with those shoes - they're too conventional - you need something more fun/funky/playful/cool on your feet :)

    1. I thought about the shoes and must admit had my doubts ... in the end I decided to experiment! At lest at a theoretical level non conventional shoes seemed somehow expected and well ... conventional. I like the discrepancy the shoes create - that is not to say I will always wear my new short Turias with those shoes - hey maybe I will never wear it with those again but if I don't dare to experiment on my blog where am I going to do it ... at the market? ;)

  15. Definitely cool! Love the fabric and am really drawn to the longer thinner straps and the 'bib' lower down. It really adds a fun twist. I definitely didn't notice the buttons - and you know how worried I am about pattern placement!!! I think you've styled them perfectly and think the shoes, unlike the comment before, are the perfect match. Exactly as you say. These more conventional shoes show of the dungarees far more. A really fabulous make that I hope you wear out on really dressy occassions!!!

    1. Thank you Kirsty! the straps and the bib were more of a forced choice - not enough fabric ;) but I'm glad they work :D

  17. Altro che bambina gigantesca... Molto cool!! Sei davvero bravissima! XO

  18. Golden nipples, bwahaha. And that's my childishness out of my system :) I gotta say I prefer your longer length ones, but you are one of those incredibly chic and stylish people who can make this short version work. So work it, girl!

  20. Bella, molto originale.

  21. Hi they look great on you, and the make is impeccable I absolutely love the fabric choice and the buttons. I do however agree with Unknown on the shoes. Since the shorts are feminine and on the tight side I feel your shoes need to be tough, and on the big and bulky side to balance it out. So for example high heel lace-up ankle boots with a rugged rubber sole, or a pair of mens oxfords not black but a golden beige (in gold or silver would look neat too) or leather sneaker slip ons.
Once again though the shorts are great!

    1. I'm glad you like them! Great advice! Thank you! I will definitely try them with the ankle boots you mention, my oxfords are black so no go and to the leather slip ons I am sort of allergic right now ;)
