New Pair of Pants for Miss Smarty-Pants
I think we’ve established that I am a beginner dressmaker, sewer, sewist - however you want to call it (BTW which term do you prefer?). I am still in the love-hate phase with my sewing machine. Sometimes I think it has a mind of its own and applies it towards evil …
Instead of practising more on my sewing machine and bettering myself, I went and bought an overlocker. It's a Bernina 700D and I purchased it at a garage sale "as new", for a forth of the current retail price. Actually, I discovered that after buying it by doing an internet search at home. After having it checked by a professional, who confirmed that it was practically new, I thought I should take it for a spin and make something - without much preparation because apparently, in my mind, I already “know it all”.
The Burda Jersey Trousers #135 seemed perfect for the task. Before cutting a 38 (my size according to Burda’s sizing chart) I measured the waist (actually abdomen) circumference and realised that it was too big so I cut two sizes down. I also modified the pattern to have a more tapered leg. I found the sewing instructions to be confusing in places, especially the pocket steps.
After skimming through the manual and figuring out some basics about my overlocker (like threading, differential transport workings, basic stitches…) I got to sewing. I don’t know why instead of just guiding the fabric (a 100% cotton jersey) I kept pulling on it resulting in really stretched seams. So I kept carving the bad seams out and stitching new ones, gradually reducing the fit on my pants. In the end the shape was so different from the pattern that I had to change the entire look. I shortened them slightly, shortened the leg bands, lowered the waist and added a satin ribbon drawstring and bow.
Can you still call pants a pair of leggings with pockets?

Fun story :) I think your way of learning is the best way to make huge progress real fast. And your legging pants are really cute!

Deletegreat job. Sasha, I will still call them leggings though. it is a pleasure to just look at your pictures.
ReplyDeleteThank you Ada... I think I will call them "they were supposed to be pants leggings so give me a break if I wear them with a shortish t-shirt" :-)
DeleteThey are really cute!
ReplyDeleteUsing a new machine is the best way to learn in my opinion- now you know not to pull, right?
I'm with you that leggings aren't pants but occasionally I might be caught wearing a top that is just a little shorter than I maybe should ;-)
Oh ... yes I do indeed :) and I'm glad you think they're cute...
