A Celebration…
40 years ago Diane von Furstenberg launched her signature dress: the wrap dress. It immediately became a classic. It is a dress for all body types - accentuating a woman’s curves or creating the illusion of curves on a more androgynous figure. It’s a simple silhouette that offers a sense of effortless ease and can make you feel beautiful and comfortable at the same time.
Because I prefer defining myself foremost as a maker I decided to … make one.
At first the idea scared me … it takes so little to transform a wannabe fabulous dress into a housedress and not knowing where to begin I enrolled in the Craftsy “Wrap Knit Dress” class. I was a bit disappointed. I found it to be basic and frankly quite boring. There was… is a pattern included with the class but knowing it can take a long time for it to arrive to Italy I bought the New Look pattern as a print-at-home pdf… the whole 120 pages of it! What made me decide on this one was the fulness of the skirt and the collar.

I had to modify the armhole - made it smaller, and the sleeve cap - forward shoulder adjustment. I’m still not 100% happy with how the armhole-sleeve cap fit me … it’s a work in progress.
After pattern manipulations of every other kind, the back neck ended up with being to low and the collar that I shortened by about 2-3cm doesn’t rest nicely on the back of my neck. The next time I’ll have to address the issue.
The main thing I do not like about this pattern is the waistline with the darts and the seaming and the waistband/fake sash. I guess it all might be necessary for a woven but with knits I find it totally superfluous. Do you know by any chance a wrap dress pattern designed for knits?
RECAP
Pattern: New Look 6674 - view A
Fabric: medium weight viscose knit
Notions: fusible interface, clear elastic (for the shoulder seams), 2 “hook and eye” closures
Mods: I adapted the pattern for knit fabric, aded 3/4 sleeves and eliminated all topstitching.
With this the total number of dresses I own raised to a staggering four - all made by me. DVF said “Feel like a woman, wear a dress.” Wearing this dress made me get it … and it’s empowering!
DeleteIt's so funny to read your worries, when it looks so wonderfully fabulous on you! I thought about using Vogue 8379 before I made my wrap dress from the vintage pattern, it's got a similar collar style to your New Look. I may yet give it a go as mine is a bit blousey and 8379 looks nice and fitted.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Sarah! I'm a beginner after all... so I don't have much confidence ;) I's something that I hope to acquire with time, experience and why not, thanks to the graceful comments from my readership :)) The Vogue 8379 looks really good!!! might be just the one I was looking for! Thank you!
DeleteAbsolutely stunning! And I guess you know what am gonna ask, since I have already got one of your creations in my list to feature on SSB. Would you mind me featuring any of your projects on SSB? As mentioned on another post, I credit, link to your post and let you know when featured.

Thank You T! again, no problem :)
DeleteOh, it's gorgeous on you! You have such an instinctive eye for matching patterns with fabric, I think we sew-ers tend to be our own severest critic, because none of the issues you mentioned are immediately apparent, but if you really want a wrap dress pattern designed specifically for knits, Style Arc (stylearc.com.au) recently released a couple - check their dresses page. Mind you, since they're based in Australia it might mean the same kind of postal wait for you.... :(
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Danielle! .... oooo the Lea dress looks nice and has a collar with a stand! I don't really understand the construction of the back from the drawing though ...:-?
DeleteE' venuto davvero bene! complimenti.
ReplyDeleteGrazie Mille Silvia!
DeleteGorgeous! You look stunning in this dress. I'm glad you couldn't find the chainlink print. this one is much more interesting. I love textural prints like this. And wow, Sasha, you have gorgeous hair :O I've used a Burda magazine pattern in the past and I was very happy with it. I can't look it up right now, but I will if you're interested.
ReplyDeleteThank You so much Sara!!! The first place I looked for a wrap dress pattern was Burdastyle but found only 3 patterns that were quite far away from my idea of a wrap dress ... Do you know of another one... more close to the original DVF wrap!?
DeleteThe pattern is 09/2006-114 http://www.burdastyle.com/projects/feel-like-a-woman-make-a-wrap-dress. Sorry, I realize it would be difficult to procure. I was lucky to get a bunch of back-issues a few years ago. Otherwise, this pattern isn't cheap but it's supposed to be really good : http://www.nancysnotions.com/product/wrap+dress+pattern.do
Deleteohhh bummer ... the Burda one looks really great ... it has the right collar no unnecessary seams and the right skirt fullness... the Christine Johnson is so nice but pricey indeed !!!!
DeleteComplimenti, Sasha!
DeleteJust stunning! I think the sleeve length change was a great alteration.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Morgan! I thought he original sleeve length made it seem somehow old.
DeleteWaouh! Sasha you're so classy! e anche il tuo Jacques ti sei riuscito molto bene!! Brava :)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Mitch ... you made me blush ... :") !!!
Deletethat is such a beautiful dress, sasha! i want to make something similar for years, both in short and maxi length (think i've found some burda patterns to use, but as usual, i am yet to find time to make it happen).. i love the fabric you used.. and you look really great in your new dress, maybe it's time to make dress no. 5 :p
ReplyDeleteI cant' wait to see one made by you ... I wander if it'd have some rock glam element ;) ...
DeleteI guess it's a go for dress no. 5 then!!! ...
You look gorgeous in this dress Sasha! None of the issues you talk about are visible, it just looks like a very well fitted and beautiful dress, so don't worry. I have fabric for a wrap dress and I hope it will look as good as yours ;-)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Pauline! I can't wait to see yours! I bet it'll be wonderful :) !!!
DeleteYour dress is really great ! I love the fabric ! I'm a huge fan of vogue 8379, I made several versions. The skirt is full but you can reduce it if you like.
ReplyDeleteAll your versions are gorgeous!!! I definitely have to try vogue 8379!!
DeleteThat sounds like alot of alterations, but it really does look great on you. mccalls 6744, maybe?
ReplyDeleteThank you Tasha! mccalls 6744 is so nice but maybe not a proper wrap ...it would look great though, maxi in some flowy silk chiffon!
DeleteBellissimo, e ti sta d'incanto!
DeleteStunning!! I have one that looks quite similar, actually, made with similar colour fabric in a different print, wiht the StyleArc Kate dress pattern, which is for knits and is the best of all the wrap dress patterns I own (I have promised not to buy any more!!!). Lynne
ReplyDeleteThank you Lynne! The Kate dress is very stylish (who doesn't love the style of the Duchess of Cambridge ;) ) and I guess I can always add a collar!
DeleteQue vestido tan bonito!!! Te sienta de maravilla.
ReplyDeleteBesos.
Muchas gracias :) !!!
DeleteIt 's very pretty, elegant and extremely feminine! Well done! I never sewed a wrap dress, so unfortunately, I can't recommend a pattern!
ReplyDeleteThank You so much ... I'm really happy you like it!
DeleteBellissimo, ti sta benissimo.
ReplyDeleteSabrina
Grazie Sabrina!
DeleteBravissima!! Tessuto molto molto bello!
ReplyDeleteGrazie Stefania!
ReplyDeleteStile e bravura, i miei complimenti. :)
Grazie Natascia :)
DeleteBeautiful wrap dress. I have just cut out the 'Ultimate Wrap Dress' by Sew Over It, its designed for knits. Lesley
ReplyDeleteThank you Lesley ... it looks so nice I guess I could always just add a collar ;)
DeleteThis dress looks stunning! I wan't one too!
ReplyDeleteThank You Mette!!! I'm really glad you like it :)
DeleteThis is epic, love it! I enrolled in the same class too and was kind of let down by it - and couldn't understand why they had to send a pattern for wovens either. I have the Christine jonson which I bought direct from her but haven't used it. I don't like the idea of doubling the bodice as self lining except for a winter dress. I much prefer binding to facings as used in other patterns. Check out cashmerette who does a great wrap dress central, and lladybird who has made more than one using DVF Patterns. I made my first one in merino jersey using a pattern from the little black dress book - brilliant book, by the way - basically because I loved her "essenziale" design. Style arc are now a better deal - you don't have to buy a one size paper pattern from Australia, they have a PDF shop on Etsy, and have reiussed their Kate wrap dress (thanks to me harassing them I think!) Which has the best reviews on patternreview.com along with the nicest makes, I think. One piece pieces is not separate bodice and shirt. I also recently bought sewoverit's wrap dress which is similar but no pleats at the waist. Hope this wasn't TMI..
ReplyDeleteThank you Francesca!!! .... this is def. not TMI this is great info :)))) I had no idea style arc had a pdf shop on etsy !!! that is just great because I know my next wrap is the kate ;)
DeleteFeatured on SSB. Thanks for permitting. https://www.facebook.com/SassySewingBees
ReplyDeleteVogue 8379 is excellent and made for knits. I have about 15 wrap dress patterns by anyone who's made one. I even have the original DVF pattern released in the 1970's...which I will be making this month. Can you believe it? After 2 years of bidding on ebay for the pattern and paying $100...I still haven't made it yet!
